DRESSED TO THRILL: Costumes, fancy dresses
Do you realize that costume parties once were considered scandalous in England for a long while, because men and women connected them with debauchery and decadence? In the United Stats, however, dressing up has, mostly, as of the huge appeal of Halloween and pantomimes. Some of my best childhood memories are of Halloween costume parties, where I think I almost covered the entirety of superheroes. The coolest part is that costumes are still an integral part of our Halloween, though we are now too old for trick-or-treating habit.
In the West, fancy dress parties are more probably to have started in England. The masked balls of the seventeen hundreds were perhaps the 1st fancy dress affairs. Under Queen Victoria they introduced costume parties, that then grew in popularity. In modern eras, on both sides of the Atlantic, costumes have become the life of all lot of modern parties. So a lot of of our favored bits from movies involve costume parties, don’t they? Remember Mean Girls, Bridget Jones’s Diary, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Birdcage?
Scary or funny?
No wonder then that costumes and fancy dresses have become a big industry to serve to the demands of the folk. There are two chief reactions you might desire to get from men and women when you decide to appear in fancy dress. You either wish to frighten them, or elicit laughter. As a result, the most popular fancy dresses are those of men and women from horror or comedy shows. Dracula is one of the favorites, as are Laurel and Hardy and Charlie Chaplin. Of late, there is quite a rage about TV programs, like Friends.
Pick and choose
So how do you find yourself a fancy dress? 1st, naturally, you must decide what you wish to be, after carefully considering the type of the affair. Once you’ve done that, you have two options. You can drive down to a great fancy dress store and try out several and finally decide on one. Who knows, while at the place, you could feel so taken with a certain outfit that you could discard your 1st costume thought altogether. The 2nd option would be look for a dress on the Internet, among the variety of sites that offer outfits. Though this is obviously the easier choice, it can become more troublesome than it looks. Especially if your dress arrives late, or if you discover that it fits badly or is made of low quality material, or that it is not how you had thought it to be. It’s not for nothing that they say, seeing is believing.
Make your own
Naturally, you could put together your own fancy dress outfit. This is particularly useful for pantomimes, when you can make Robin Hood outfits from old leggings, and add on trimmings to leather jackets and feathers to old berets. If you happen to possess any needlework skills also, you can create old outfits or costumes a whole new twist and casually slip on a completely new character without forking out more than a few cents. Now how about that —- self-made costumes —- for a new party thought?
